The BigDog is an experimental quadruped robot under development for the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). It is designed to walk, run and climb on rough terrain while carrying heavy loads.
The robot has a steel frame and is powered by a one-cylinder gasoline engine driving a hydraulic actuation system. The BigDog has articulated legs with compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next.
