The M47 tank design combined the turret of the new T42 (which was not then ready for production) and a modified M46 hull (the M46 was a development of the M26 Pershing, which entered service in Europe six weeks before the end of World War II). The hull has long storage bins that protrude on both sides and halfway across the engine deck. The turret ring is enlarged and features a needle-nose design, better protecting its forward base.
