The Leopard 2A5 and 2A6, also known as the Leopard 2 (improved), are significantly upgraded variants of the original Leopard 2. The Leopard 2A8 is the latest configuration (see "Variants," below, for more information).

The tank has a standard three-compartment configuration: the driver at the front; fighting section in the center; and the engine at the rear.
