The Ariete was the first Italian main battle tank (MBT) design comparable to other NATO and Warsaw Pact MBTs.

The tank is of welded steel construction, with a layer of advanced composite armor over the front glacis, nose and turret front and sides. The Ariete has a powerful gun, sophisticated fire control and a good power-to-weight ratio.
