Based on the M107/M110 SPG chassis, the M578 is a light armored recovery vehicle used for recovering disabled vehicles as well as changing major sub-systems in the field (engines, transmissions and guns).
Originally developed as a heavy lifting crane for barrel replacements of self-propelled guns in heavy artillery battalions, the M578 of late functions more as a wrecker and a general recovery vehicle. Original plans called for two versions, one with a turret and one without.
