The 4 x 4 Renault Forward Area Armored Vehicle (VAB or Vehicle de l'Avant Blinde) is the French army's principal armored personnel carrier (APC). It has been exported to several countries in both the 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 configurations. Longer, heavier variants are still in production as the VAB Mark III and Mack Defense Mark III Lakota.

The 4 x 4 VAB was selected by the French army in 1974 after a competition between Panhard and Saviem/Renault (both offering 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 versions)....
