Derived from the chassis of the FV601 Saladin armored car (but deployed before the Saladin), the FV603 6 x 6 wheeled armored personnel carrier first entered service in the early 1950s.
Its design reflected the need for better protection for infantry operating in a variety of combat climates, especially that of (then) Malaya, where the lack of such vehicles was originally experienced.
It is a large vehicle with a front-mounted engine and built-up superstructure with sloping sides....
