The Matador is part of a family of South African 4 x 4 mine-resistant armored vehicles. It has a double-skin monocoque hull structure that provides protection against kinetic energy projectiles at NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 4569 Level 3. Extra protection can be employed against specific threats, such as rocket-propelled grenades.

The V-shaped hull is capable of resisting blasts equivalent to 110 lb (50 kg) of TNT in a side blast. It can also withstand anti-tank land...
