In 2005, Rheinmetall Landsysteme (RLS) began developing the Geschutztes Fahrzeugsystem or GeFaS (which means "protected vehicle system" in German) as a foundation for a new generation of tactical vehicles.

The GeFaS is a modular vehicle system that allows for different configurations for a variety of missions. The modules in the basic vehicle can be mixed and matched.
