Evolution of the FV432 armored personnel carrier began with the FV420 series design studies undertaken in the 1950s by the Fighting Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (FVRDE), a British Ministry of Defense facility subsequently renamed the Royal Armament RDE Chertsey.
No FV420s were produced, but the design became the FV430 series. From that series, the FV432 was the first to go into production (the FV431 load carrier was not produced).
