The BMD-2 (boevaya mashina desantnaya) airborne combat vehicle is almost identical to the BMD-1 except that it is fitted with a smaller turret, search lights and additional side-view periscopes.

It is unclear if the BMD-2 is a new vehicle, or simply a conversion of the BMD-1. The BMD-2's main armament is a single Type 2A42 30-mm stabilized cannon, the same used on the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle.
