The U.S.-built M40 106-mm recoilless rifle is an anti-tank weapon that is much lighter than a standard gun of its caliber but fires a heavier shell.
The gunner uses a 12.7-mm (0.50-cal) spotting rifle mounted along the axis of the 106-mm barrel to determine the necessary elevation for the main gun.
The M40 fires high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) and HE practice rounds.
