The MLG 27-mm light naval gun was developed as a replacement for all 20-mm and 40-mm guns on German navy ships. It is based on the BK 27 aircraft gun found on Tornado and Gripen fighters.
It is designed to engage air targets; small, mobile and larger naval threats; and fixed and mobile land targets. It makes use of a revolver mechanism that differs from the typical reciprocating mechanisms of systems like the Phalanx.
