The Mk 45 naval artillery gun mount is a lightweight development of the basic post-World War II Mk 42 5-inch (127-mm)/54-caliber gun (see separate database entry). It is a single-barrel, dual-purpose mount that is the main gun armament of U.S. ARLEIGH BURKE-class destroyers and TICONDEROGA-class cruisers. Compared to the Mk 42, the Mk 45 sacrificed firepower for weight reduction. A later development has led to a more powerful gun with a significantly longer range potential.
