The Land-Based Phalanx weapon system (LPWS) is an adoption of the Navy's Mk 15 Phalanx close-in weapon system (CIWS) for counter-rocket, artillery and mortar (C-RAM ) missions developed by the U.S. Army. It is designed to be interoperable with other protection sensors and systems.
The LPWS uses the same 20-mm M61A1 Gatling gun as the naval version and fires either M-246 or M-940 self-destructing rounds at a rate of 3,000 or 4,500 rounds per minute. The rate of fire is selectable...
