Installed in helicopters and ground combat vehicles, the 20-mm M621 single-barreled cannon has been widely deployed. It is electrically fired with a gas-operated recoil mechanism. It can be fitted with either single or double flat ammunition feeds.

Development of the gun for French army use began in 1957 when it was designated AME 582; the airborne version, designated AME 621, began development in 1962.
