The GAU-22 is the gun system for the F-35 Lightning II fighter, which is based on the GAU-12/U Gatling gun. It has four barrels instead of five to reduce weight and space so that the gun can fit into the internal mounting. The GAU-22 is about 40 lb ((18 kg) lighter and takes up around 20 percent less volume than the GAU-12.

On F-35A conventional-takeoff-and-landing (CTOL) aircraft, the gun is internally mounted on the left shoulder of the fuselage, above the air intake.
