The GAU-21 is a modification of the FN Herstal 12.7-mm/.50-caliber M3M machine gun intended as the primary suppressive system for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps helicopters as well as the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.
The GAU-21 system consists of three parts: the .50-caliber machine gun; pintle head or "soft mount;" and the cradle, which is used to integrate the weapon into the host platform.
