The HJT-36 Sitara (Hindi for "star") intermediate jet trainer (IJT) was developed to replace the HJT-16 Kiran trainer, which was originally designed in the 1960s as an entry-level jet trainer. The trainer is of light alloy and composite construction. Student and instructor cockpits are arranged in tandem placed behind a shallow and low nose cone with an oversized canopy for better visibility.
