The Bateleur (an African eagle) medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was designed to cover South Africa's vast search-and-rescue responsibility of approximately 5 million square miles. South Africa has a 200-nm exclusive economic zone along its 1,860 mi (3,000 km) of coastline.
