The Shackleton was derived from the British Avro Lincoln of post-World War II fame, and evolved from a maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft used in anti-submarine warfare into an airborne early warning (AEW) platform. In its long career, the aircraft was also used as a bomber and as an emergency troop transport.
