The Nimrod is a British anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and maritime patrol aircraft based on the De Havilland Comet airliner. An airborne early warning (AEW) variant was test-flown for several years, then abandoned in favor of the U.S.-built E-3 Sentry.
The Nimrod performs four roles: anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface unit warfare; intelligence and communications support; and search and rescue.
