The MD Explorer is twin-engined light helicopter. It was one of several helicopters that competed for the Army's Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program.

To this end, MD Helicopters formed a LUH team consisting of DynCorp International, headquartered at Irving, Texas, GENCO of Pittsburgh, and Aviation Systems of N.W. Florida, based in Pensacola. The award eventually went to the UH-72A Lakota light utility helicopter (see "Status," below.)
