The L-188 Electra was a four-engine turboprop transport used for both civil and military aviation. Some of the planes in military service were fitted with equipment to perform maritime patrol and electronic intelligence (ELINT) functions. The Electra was the ancestor of the U.S. Navy's primary maritime patrol aircraft, the P-3 Orion (see separate database entry).
