The group calls itself Jama'a Ahl as-Sunna Li-da'wa wa-al Jihad, which roughly translates to "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad." The group was founded in Maiduguri in northern Nigeria. Local residents coined the name of Boko Haram. Its translation is disputed.
