Background
In 1989, after nearly a decade of labor unrest, strikes led by the Solidarity trade union movement, and various government shakeups aimed at keeping the communists in power, the communist government and Solidarity's electoral wing negotiated a peaceful transfer of power. The country was renamed the Republic of Poland the same year. Since that time, Poland has joined both the NATO Alliance (1999) and the European Union (2004).
