Hungary's armed forces have been dramatically reduced since the end of the Cold War. During the Cold War era, Hungary maintained a Warsaw Pact army of 160,000 troops. Today the total strength of the Hungarian armed forces numbers around 28,000 active professional officers and noncommissioned officers. There are also 12,000 border guards, which operate under the oversight of the Ministry of Interior.
