The German armed forces have been greatly downsized since East and West Germany were reunified into a single state in 1990. At the time of reunification, the size of the German military was estimated at 520,000-585,000 troops. Since then, the military has been greatly reduced as a result of various reform efforts aimed at making the German armed forces more professional, expeditionary, and capable of rapid reaction rather than based entirely on territorial defense.
