Under the former 2015 Armed Forces Model, the French armed forces were drastically reduced from their previous Cold War footing and were professionalized. In 1995, there were 502,500 military personnel in the French armed forces. By 1999, the number had been reduced to 430,000.
In 2002, the armed forces were fully professionalized.
