Estonia maintains an active force of around 4,000+, including conscripts (who by law are non-deployable outside national borders). There is also the 15,000-strong volunteer Defense League (Kaitseliit), which is subordinate to the Estonian Defense Forces and provides for local and territorial defense.

Conscription is for eight months, though officers, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and certain specialists may serve up to 11 months.
