The Danish armed forces total around 15,400 active personnel. There are also some 44,000 reserves. Conscription is based on a mostly voluntary lottery system and lasts for 4-12 months.

The volunteer Home Guard (Hjemmevaernet), totaling 45,000 personnel, provides active support to the three service branches. The Danish defense forces are expected to deploy abroad as a contributor within NATO- and U.N.-led missions, defend and deter along the country's borders and territorial claims...
