Background
When the Czechoslovak federation dissolved on January 1, 1993, two free and independent republics – the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic – emerged to replace Czechoslovakia. Vaclav Havel, a poet, playwright, and former dissident, became the first democratically elected president of the Czech Republic on January 26, 1993. Vaclav Klaus was elected as the first prime minister in June 1992, even before the separation of the two republics.
