As recently as 2001, the Croatian armed forces totaled 47,500 troops. By 2013, that force had shrunk to 16,500+ active-duty soldiers, sailors, and airmen. This number did not include civilian employees and members of support personnel for the General Staff.
 
Under the 2012 Strategic Defense Review (SDR) guidelines adopted by the government on July 25, 2012, Croatia's armed forces were reduced in number to around 15,000 by the end of 2017.
