North Macedonia maintains a small, joint force weighed heavily in favor of the Army that – per the 2003 Strategic Defense Review – aims to operate within NATO standards. Conscription was in effect until May 2006, when it was abolished – more than a year earlier than planned. By December 2006, the last conscripts had completed their service.
