The command structure of the Uzbek national armed forces is defined by the 2001 "On Defense" amendment to the Constitution. Under its guidelines, the president serves as commander in chief of the military, appoints senior military officials, and forms and chairs the National Security Council, the official mechanism for outlining foreign and defense policies. The office of the president serves as the primary command authority for all military and security-related decisions.
