The Ukrainian navy is based on former units from the Soviet Black Sea Fleet. On May 31, 1997, Ukraine and Russia signed an agreement on the division of the Black Sea Fleet and the terms of its deployment. The sides co-existed until early 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and officially renounced existing bilateral agreements with Ukraine.
