Political and Security Environment

The current Panamanian government is a representative democracy consisting of three branches. The judiciary is independently appointed, with a nine-member Supreme Court. The executive and legislative branches are elected to five-year terms by direct secret votes. As a result of successive constitutional reforms in the 2000s, the vice presidency was consolidated into a single position and the number of seats in the unicameral National Assembly reduced from 78 seats to 71.
