Overview

With the signing of the peace accord between the government and the rebels in 1992 and the accompanying agreement to downsize the armed forces, opportunities for military sales to El Salvador declined and have not recovered. Now, the military is more focused on supporting the national police in the fight against violent gangs and drug traffickers.
