Cuba is one of the few remaining communist states in the world.  Since the overthrow of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista Zaldivar after the 1959 revolution, Cuba has been dominated by the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), which is the country's only legal political party.  Although Cuba is headed nominally by a president, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba is considered the most powerful person in Cuba.
