OVERVIEW

Zambia was once one of the richest African states due to its large deposits of copper. The drop in the price of copper in 1975 had disastrous effects on the Zambian economy. Since the 1970s, disease, political mismanagement and debt have added to Zambia's domestic woes. In part affected by falling copper prices, the Zambian currency has also suffered. By early 2014, the kwacha was considered the poorest performing currency among all of Africa.
