OVERVIEW

Before South Sudan split in 2011, Sudan was the largest country in Africa. It is now the second largest, after Algeria.

Sudan is a desert nation bordered by the Red Sea to the northeast; Egypt to the north; Libya to the northwest; Chad to the west; Central African Republic to the southwest; South Sudan to the south; and Ethiopia and Eritrea to the east.
