Background. Ethiopia is rather unique in Africa in that it has been a self-governed country for its entire history, with the exception of its 1936-1941 occupation by Italy. Traditionally a monarchy, it became a military dictatorship in 1974 when a military junta overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie.
