BeiDou is a constellation of Chinese navigation satellites sponsored by the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

Its initial phase, BeiDou-1, offered an "active" positioning service that required a two-way communication link between user terminals and ground stations via satellite. Because of this active design, user equipment was larger and less versatile compared to passive systems like GPS.
