The survey autonomous semi-submersible 6M (SASS) concept grew from 1995 discussions of the high costs associated with surveying activities. SASS technology permits small unmanned semi-submersible vehicles to deploy sensors for gathering data from above or below the sea at significant distances from a ship or from the shore.
