A single Soviet-built, WHISKEY-class attack submarine was transferred to Cuba in April 1979. The craft was employed as a stationary battery-charging platform and for in-port submarine training.

The Soviet Union completed 236 units in four shipyards from 1951)1957; submarines of this class were also transferred to Albania, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Indonesia, North Korea, and Poland; an additional 16 units were constructed in China.
