The design for this class evolved from the OYASHIO class. Each unit is fitted with the Stirling air-independent propulsion (AIP). A total of 10 units of this class are planned. ENGINEERING: The first six subs in the class are propelled by a large electric motor with three power sources: diesel engines; the Stirling air-independent propulsion (AIP) engines; and main storage batteries.
