This class, designed by 701 Shipbuilding Institute, Wuhan, China, is an improvement on China's Modified ROMEO-class (Type 033) boats. The first two units were launched in July 1971 and November 1974 and were commissioned in April 1974 and 1975, respectively. These two subs, and a third commissioned in 1979, were known as "MING Type ES5C/D."
