The submarine was originally commissioned as a ballistic missile submarine of the YANKEE class. She was converted from 1978 to 1980 and lengthened by 16 ft 4 in (5.0 m) to accommodate the Skat low-frequency sonar suite under Project 667AK, Akson-1 (NATO: Yankee Pod).
