This class is the 1200 version of the widely used German Type 209 submarine. This mod of the Type 209 was reportedly the quietest ever to put to sea at the time. Advanced rafting techniques were used to quiet the propulsion machinery. A planned order of a fourth trio of submarines of this class was canceled.
