The design of the ISAAC PERAL-class submarines was originally a cooperative effort between Izar (now Navantia) and DCN, France, based on the French SCORPENE design. The partnership dissolved after Spain decided it wanted a larger, longer-range design. Navantia developed a domestic design using a 300-kW air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using bio-ethanol fuel cells.
